How to have your chocolate AND stay on track this Easter

Can you believe it's April already? The year is flying by. Easter is on our doorstep and it's time to hug our loved ones and enjoy a few hot cross buns.

Easter can be a time that tests our so-called willpower, but I'd like to suggest we reframe this and think about our enviro-power. What I mean by this is it's often the foods that we surround ourselves with, that we tend to eat the most. Which means WE hold the power to design our home environment in a way that supports our goals.

Have a look at what is in your fridge and your pantry right now. Do you have a bowl of Easter eggs on the bench? Or is the closest thing a nice big bowl of fruit? Our environment is often what dictates how successful we are at sticking to our health and wellness goals.

Of course it's ok to have a little Easter treat and we all can enjoy a little bit of chocolate once and a while. So how do you get the balance right? Here are my 5 top tips:

How to have your chocolate AND stay on track this Easter

  1. Keep your bunny for Easter Sunday

If you love chocolate at Easter time, save your favourite egg or bunny and enjoy it on Easter Sunday for morning tea or whenever you’d usually have a sweet. For the rest of Easter, make sure your fruit bowl is full of nature’s lollies and tuck your Easter goodies away until the day you plan to have a nibble.

  2. Savour and enjoy every mouthful (one ear at a time)

When the day arrives and it’s time to rip open your bunny, before you destroy its ear in one giant mouthful, take a breath and focus on eating it slowly and mindfully, savouring every mouthful.

  3. Go dark

If you want to eat less chocolate, try at least 70% or greater dark chocolate. It will give you a real chocolate hit and you won’t be able to eat too much in one sitting.

  4. Create a platter with vibrant coloured foods

Serve your chocolate on a platter like you would a cheese platter with a range of vibrant coloured fruits, vegetables and nuts. You get the best of all the worlds and the whole family can dig in and enjoy it together.

  5. Cook with cacao

Think about other ways to get your chocolate fix. Add a tsp of cacao powder to your morning porridge, or make a healthy hot chocolate by mixing a tsp of cacao powder with a cup of milk and heating in the microwave for 2 minutes. I also love thawed frozen blueberries, Greek yoghurt and cacao nibs for a sweet treat after dinner that gives me a nice chocolate hit.

Have a wonderful Easter guys, stay safe and hug your loved ones closely. Enjoy and I’ll chat with you again soon xo
